Learning Styles

Learn the way you learn best

Everyone takes in, makes sense of and uses new information differently. The Learning Styles assessment shows your preferences across the four steps of learning, so you can learn faster and help others learn too.

  • Four steps of learning
  • For you and the people you teach
  • Coaching, training and teams

What it is

Nobody learns the same way

Some people like to read; others need to see, hear or try. Some learn best alone, others in a group. Learning Styles shows your natural preferences, so you can set yourself up to learn well and share information in a way other people can take in.

It shows you

  • How you prefer to take in new information
  • How you make it meaningful and remember it
  • Who you rely on when you learn
  • How to help other people learn

It is not

  • A test of intelligence
  • A box you are stuck in
  • A reason to avoid other ways of learning
  • An exact science: it shows preferences

The learning cycle

Four steps. Your own blend.

Learning moves through four steps. At each one you have a natural preference, and together they make up your own blend.

Attending

Paying attention

Your motivation and focus when something is new.

Your preference may be

  • Telescopic: one thing at a time
  • Wide-angled: taking in everything around you

To learn better

  • Set up your space before you start
  • Remove what distracts you

Relating

Linking to what you know

How you connect new information with what you already know.

Your preference may be

  • Visual: seeing it
  • Auditory: hearing it
  • Kinaesthetic: doing it

To learn better

  • Use more than one sense
  • See it, say it, then try it

Translating

Making it meaningful

Who you rely on most to turn information into learning.

Your preference may be

  • Dependent: guided by an expert
  • Collaborative: learning with others
  • Autonomous: working it out yourself

To learn better

  • Ask for the support that suits you
  • Mix guided, group and solo learning

Understanding

Using what you learn

How you put the pieces together and apply them.

Your preference may be

  • Global: the big picture first
  • Analytical: step by step

To learn better

  • Ask for the overview, or the detail, up front
  • Put it to use soon after learning it

Whatever your blend, people learn best when they see it, hear it and try it.

Questions about Learning Styles

Why do learning styles matter?

When you know how you learn, you can set up each learning experience to suit you, and share information in a way others can take in.

When should we use it?

Ideally before any training, coaching or new role. If that moment has passed, the sooner the better.

Is it the same as visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning?

Those are part of it, in one of the four steps. The assessment also looks at how you pay attention, who you rely on to learn and how you use what you learn.

Can a whole team take it?

Yes. It helps trainers and managers plan sessions that work for everyone in the room.

How much does it cost?

It depends on how many people take it. Ask us and we will give you a clear fee.
